1,120 Miles Apart, Yet Our Minds Are Connected

The other day, I had a dream. In a lot of my dreams, my brain manages to pull out random, hyper-specific nuggets from the past that I have completely forgotten about.

This particular dream pulled out “the cheese grater”—something I knew only my friend Kate would truly understand.

One day, back in maybe fifth grade, our friend Taylor casually told us that his older brother had cheese grated his arm. We were already absolutely terrified of his older brother, and this piece of information only added to the horror. It was the craziest, most unhinged thing I had ever heard in my life.

His brother cheese grated his arm?! What?!

I mean, looking back, who knows if that actually happened. But the thought was just so deeply funny and uniquely evil that it permanently stayed with us.

The second I woke up, I immediately texted Kate. I had completely forgotten about the incident, and while I knew a few of our other childhood friends might vaguely remember it, Kate was the one who would truly get it. She was right there with me in MLSS when that legendary story first unfolded.

She responded almost instantly: “No way, I was subconsciously thinking about that the exact other day.”

Which is completely wild. I almost didn’t text her because it felt like such an insignificant, random thought to drop into someone’s inbox. But it turns out that insignificant thing is exactly what connects us.

You’re never going to regret sending the text that connects you to another person.
