Why is Australia the vacation destination right now? Seriously, who is pushing this agenda?
I first remember learning about Australia back in first grade. My teacher—who I thought was the epitome of cool—told our class about a trip where she went bungee jumping. We were all in absolute awe and begged to see proof. Later that week, for show-and-tell, she finally pulled up a video on the Promethean board… of a big bridge and some water. That was it! Her epic bungee jumping video was just landscape B-roll.
Despite the letdown, Australia has held a special place in my mind ever since. I don’t even know that much about it; I’ve just preserved this childhood memory of it being a magical place, and I desperately want that to be true.
But recently, the universe has been aggressively shoving it in my face:
- First of all, my girl Lorde is from New Zealand—which I know is technically different, but it’s the same geographic ecosystem.
- Kate is thinking about studying abroad there.
- Jinkie is headed to Australia for a full three weeks. (And I’m forgetting someone else, but there was definitely another person on my timeline going, too).
- Georgia from Too Hot to Handle is Australian.
- I was just watching The Kardashians, and Kim is casually talking about Australia.
- I’ve been binge-watching The Mole for a few days now, and I just realized it’s filmed in… guess where? AUSTRALIA!
Edit: It’s July 15th and the Bachelorette is in Australia!!!
